Apple product. It’s a mundane topic, everyone is talking about it and I know that. But my palm-sized second-generation iPod touch has made me feel more special than anyone, at the young age of 15. If we talk about a 15 year old in the year 2008, the only gadgets that they own might be PSPs, Game Boy or any other portable game device. I have an iPod touch. What do I do with it? Listens to music? Done. Surfs the Internet? Done. What else? At first I was like, why did my dad even give this thing to me? Until one day, I discovered this awesome stuff on my iPod, called the Apps Store.
What is so awesome about Apps Store? Well yeah, you have millions of apps to be downloaded from the Apps Store; everything is just at your fingertips. Just make an Apple ID to download the apps and everything will appear in you device. So, is that all? Bear in mind, during that time buying application through the Internet is not a norm. There is no such thing as fully touch screen gadgets and there is no such thing as palm-sized gadgets that could equip every single thing in one device. So, iPod touch was the one of the most advanced technology that anyone could possibly imagine and you have to take note that the iPhone has not yet arrived in Malaysia!
I was not jealous with those who owned portable game console because after awhile I discovered that I could even make my own game console with my iPod! I could tilt it left, right, up, down, swipe the screen vertically, horizontally; touch the virtual button, without pushing the real button! It was certainly an experience that PSP users or GameBoy users have never experienced. Then, when I get bored with the game, I’ll just click on the Apps Store, select and download another game without having to spend time to go the video game stores. And the best part is, no one even knew that actually I was playing video games! This is the quality of an Apple product. People called it revolutionary but I called it the Best Game Capsule Ever!
Who would ever though of an Apple logo products, portraying an apple that have been bitten – maybe by Steve Jobs – could serve a great gadget experience to you? At your first glance at Apple logo, what comes out in your mind? Alright, put aside all the iPods, iPhones, Macbooks, iMacs, or MacPros, and just imagine the first impression you have in mind about the logo? For me, I would say that the logo looks professional, “cool”, and simple. But why apple? Is it a grocery shop or maybe a fruit stall? Oh yeah my 15-year-old thinking, sorry about that. It does not portray a technology-like logo to sell their brand, nor complicated technology-like stuff, neither graphical complex logo. Just with a simple, cool apple logo and they can sell their products effectively and communicate efficiently to the users.
What makes them successful in representing their products with their logo? Yes, they purposely make it simple and tidy to make it look professional in selling high-end products that serve the users well. But why did they choose an apple? My though is, there is something related to the Isaac Newton theory about concept of gravity because the incident is the spark that lead to the emergence of technology. Again, this is just my thought, not based on any facts of any kind.
So what? It is just a small logo; everyone can create one, it is not an issue. But why do we have a specific job as graphic designers to create logos? What is so important about the logo design? Why don’t the company or just anyone in the company who know how to us Adobe Illustrator or Photoshop to design a logo for them?
Let put it this way. Imagine there are no logos in this world. The companies would just use their names to represent their companies by constructing a simple text. That is much more simple thing to do; I don’t think that is a big issue. Yes, the company can start selling their product now and the company could run as usual. But wait, so now we have to read every single thing properly in order to get to know product? Like seriously? I have to read every single thing? Argh I have no time to read all those things! Can you simplify everything here? Oh yeah! Simplify every single word, make it more graphical and yeah make a logo! Not again, why do we have to go through this all again. Yes, the simplest thing to do and the most effective thing to communicate is to create a simple logo. With a single glance you can easily recognize the company and the reputation that the company holds. So you know how important the logos are in representing a company, don’t you?
The main purpose of a logo is to make the company easily recognizable and easy to differentiate from the other company. At the same time, it represents the company and the product. It also represents professionalism of the company and the seriousness of the company in doing their business. A logo does not necessary have the WOW factor; it just need to be a simple logo to represent how the company cooperates. Besides, don’t make any fuzzy stuff on your logo, make it as simple as possible and make sure that the logo will not be outdated after several decades, and then WALLA! You just produced a logo for your company yay!
Oh yeah, and remember that, logo is not something that you can easily construct and design, it is something that actually tally with the product quality and how the business operates. That is logo all about. J
